Very few of MON his works are heard today, except a popular Trumpet Concerto MON and Toy Symphony. This hardly does justice to a man who MON composed many symphonies, concertos, chamber and sacred MON works, and whose musical influence can be heard in the MON compositions of his son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This week MON Donald Macleod follows Leopold on his tours with his family, MON explores the popular Violin Manual which made him famous MON across Europe, and questions whether Leopold's status as a MON composer should be reconsidered. MON MON Leopold Mozart was the son of a bookbinder, living in MON Augsburg. He studied at the Augsburg Gymnasium, and then at MON the Jesuit school of St Salvator, where he performed as an MON actor, singer, organist and violinist. He was also a MON choirboy, and religion played an important part in his life. MON Leopold went on to compose a great many sacred choral works, MON including his Missa solemnis in C, which was once attributed MON to his son Wolfgang. MON MON Leopold became a significant figure in the early development MON of the symphony. First though, he needed to leave Augsburg MON and make for Salzburg, where he was employed as a valet and MON musician to a Canon, who was also a Count. Leopold dedicated MON his Opus 1 set of Six Church and Chamber Sonatas to his MON employer, including his Sonata in G major Op 1 No 4. TUE TUE In the 1740s, Leopold Mozart gained his first position at TUE the Court of the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg. This was an TUE unpaid position to begin with, and it was difficult to rise TUE up the ranks at Court. It is TUE probable that his Concerto in E flat for two horns and TUE strings was composed with these colleagues in mind. TUE TUE During this early period in Salzburg, Leopold met Maria Anna TUE Pertl. THU Answer: Honegger’s 'Rugby’. A great sports enthusiast, the THU French-Swiss composer Arthur Honegger adored rugby, and in THU 1928 he devoted the second of his symphonic movements to a THU rugby match in sound. THU THU 12:00 Composer of the Week b03y3dlp (Listen) THU Leopold Mozart (1719-1787), Travels with the Mozarts THU THU He was at the forefront of early symphonic writing and THU composed a great deal of music across many forms, but he's THU been largely overshadowed by the popularity of his own son; THU this week Donald Macleod with Professor Cliff Eisen, THU explores the life and music of Leopold Mozart. THU THU Leopold Mozart was convinced that his son, Wolfgang, was a THU gift from God. Such a talented son should be shown off to THU the world, and so Leopold took his family on tour. They THU performed for royalty and aristocrats; Wolfgang, aged just THU 6, played for the Empress Maria Theresa. These journeys THU abroad were also intended to be educational and Leopold, who THU was a devout Catholic, commented much on the changes in THU religious landscape from country to country. THU Once the family had returned from their Grand Tour, Leopold THU settled back into life in Salzburg, and composed his THU Symphony in G, the Neue Lambacher symphony, once thought to THU be by his son. By now Wolfgang had started to compose his THU own music, although Leopold and Wolfgang often collaborated THU together on composition, including the Concerto for Piano THU and Orchestra in D major, K 107. FRI FRI In the last decade of Leopold Mozart's life, he gave up FRI composing music. His time focused more and more on the FRI support and development of his children. It wasn't all hard FRI work though, and on one occasion Leopold and Wolfgang went FRI to a fancy dress party in Salzburg, where it was likely some FRI of Leopold's music was performed, such as his Serenade in D FRI major. FRI FRI Leopold was now facing a lonely final few years. His wife FRI Maria Anna had died in Paris, and both Wolfgang and Nannerl FRI had left home and got married. Leopold no longer sought FRI promotion at court, having been passed over a number of FRI times. He did however continue to teach musicians at home, FRI which included regular ensemble sessions, working on pieces FRI like his own Trio Sonata in A major. FRI FRI Leopold remained proud of his son's achievements, even if he FRI didn't always approve of his behaviour. One contemporary FRI account reports Leopold crying when he heard one of FRI Wolfgang's Violin works.
