Although Boccherini was MON originally born in the Tuscan city of Lucca, he spent the MON majority of his life as a working musician in Spain, after a MON brief spell in Paris. His extensive output is largely now MON forgotten, but one work in particular, the Minuet from his MON fifth String Quartet opus 11, is one of the most used entry MON points by film and TV producers today, creating a sense of MON eighteenth century elegance and period. Boccherini is also MON credited with forming the first ever string quartet, yet MON despite his popularity during much of his lifetime, MON Boccherini lived at the end of his life in virtual poverty, MON seeing his wife and daughters die one after another, before MON his own death possibly from tuberculosis. MON MON Luigi Boccherini came from a humble background, with his MON father performing as a double bassist in their home city of MON Lucca. Luigi quickly made a name for himself not only as a MON cellist, but also as a composer for the cello, including MON works such as his sixth Cello Sonata, in C major. The young MON Luigi was soon sent off to Rome for further musical MON training, where he came into contact with much of the sacred MON choral music taking place there. Boccherini would go on to MON compose many sacred choral works of his own, such as the MON Kyrie in B flat, from his own setting of the Mass. MON MON Boccherini junior was now making quite a name for himself as MON a virtuoso player of the cello, and along with his father, MON embarked on a tour performing in Venice, Trieste and Vienna. MON By the time of their second engagement in Vienna, Boccherini MON was composing and publishing his first significant works, MON which caused quite a stir. TUE TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week b01cvpxh (Listen) TUE Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805), Boccherini is Successful in TUE Paris TUE TUE He could number among his patrons the King of Spain, and the TUE heir to the Prussian throne, and he composed around one TUE hundred string quartets, and at least as many quintets, TUE amongst other works - this week Donald Macleod looks at the TUE life and music of Luigi Boccherini. TUE TUE Boccherini on tour with his father in Vienna, was soon TUE longing to return for his native city of Lucca. However upon TUE their return, Luigi was soon disillusioned and wished to TUE leave again, wanting to pursue his musical career elsewhere. TUE Still keeping his contractual ties with Lucca, Boccherini TUE toured Pavia and Cremona with his father. It was around this TUE time that he composed his successful opus two set of TUE quartets, including the second String Quartet in B flat TUE major. TUE TUE Back in Lucca, Boccherini had certain obligations to the TUE city fathers there, and was commissioned to compose for TUE various civic occasions, along with his contractual TUE arrangements to regularly perform. One work Boccherini TUE composed during this period, which may have been TUE commissioned by his city employers, was his oratorio Gioas, TUE or King of Judah. TUE TUE Soon afterwards, Boccherini's father died. Young Luigi TUE accompanied by his friend Manfredi, was able to spread his TUE wings without his family in tow, and they made their way to TUE Paris. This was good timing, as some of Boccherini's works TUE had just been published there. It was during this period in TUE Paris when Boccherini relied upon the patronage of Baron de TUE Bagge, that through this aristocrats music library, TUE Boccherini was likely to have come into contact with the TUE ideas of orchestral woodwind writing. We can hear TUE Boccherini's own writing for orchestra, including woodwind TUE instruments in his Symphony opus 7 in C major. WED WED Whilst in Paris, Boccherini was approached by the Spanish WED Ambassador, who proposed that Boccherini and his friend the WED violinist Manfredi, might like to visit Madrid, and that the WED two young men would receive a rapturous welcome from the WED heir to the Spanish throne. Both Boccherini and Manfredi WED travelled to Spain, but their welcome was not what they had WED hoped it would be. In a bid to ingratiate himself with the WED Spanish Prince, Boccherini dedicated his Opus 6 trios to WED him, including the fifth Trio in G minor. This didn't get WED the Prince's attention. WED WED Another Royal patron did however materialise, and this was WED the King's brother, Don Luis, whom Boccherini would go on to WED work for, for many years. Boccherini would compose many WED works dedicated to his royal patron, including sextets, WED quintets, and a set of symphonies, which included the third WED Symphony in C major opus 12. These works steadily began to WED establish Boccherini's reputation in Spain and further WED afield, in particular his set of quintets opus 11. The Royal Albert Hall. THU THU 12:00 Composer of the Week b01cwq76 (Listen) THU Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805), Boccherini is Desperate to THU Find a New Patron THU THU He could number among his patrons the King of Spain, and the THU heir to the Prussian throne, and he composed around one THU hundred string quartets, and at least as many quintets, THU amongst other works - this week Donald Macleod looks at the THU life and music of Luigi Boccherini. THU THU Around 1773, a talented flute player seems to have joined THU the staff of the Spanish Infante, Don Luis. This allowed THU Boccherini greater scope for composing new works, including THU the first Flute Quintet in E flat major, from Boccherini's THU opus 19 set. However with Don Luis and his court banished to THU Arenas, Boccherini was finding opportunities to compose THU quite limited. THU THU Around a decade later, the Ambassador to Prussia visited the THU Spanish Court in Madrid, where he was honoured by a THU performance of six of Boccherini's string quartets. The THU Ambassador sent a copy of the music to Frederick the Great's THU nephew, Frederick William, who soon sent the composer a gold THU box containing a letter saying how much he had enjoyed his THU music. One of the quartets the Ambassador might have heard, THU was the sixth String Quartet in A major, from the opus 32 THU set. THU THU In the 1780's Boccherini suffered a double blow with not THU only the death of his wife, but also the death of his patron THU Don Luis. King Carlos III granted Boccherini an annual THU pension, and also a place in the instrumental Royal Chapel THU in Madrid, although he was excused from fulfilling his THU duties due to his frequent spittings of blood. The following THU year Boccherini received an honorary appointment with the THU Crown Prince of Prussia, and in return the composer sent a THU number of works every year, possibly including a set of THU concert arias, such as Misera, dove son! FRI FRI Boccherini towards the end of his life, now found himself in FRI quite a predicament. King Carlos III of Spain had now died, FRI and his son, the new King Carlos IV, was less disposed FRI towards Boccherini due to an earlier disagreement. FRI Boccherini had to look for patronage elsewhere, and was FRI subsequently forced to sell a number of his works to the FRI Parisian publishing house Pleyel, for not much money. FRI However, commissions still did occasionally come in, such as FRI from the Marquis of Benavente, who wanted Boccherini to FRI arrange a number of his already composed works to include FRI guitar. One such work, which also included castanets, was FRI the Guitar Quintet in B flat major. FRI FRI Towards the end of Boccherini's life, with his Benavente FRI patrons having left for Vienna, and the composer being FRI forced to sell more of his works for little money to his FRI Parisian publisher, Boccherini started to turn more towards FRI choral writing, such as the responsory Domine ad adjuvandum. FRI Other patrons were to come and ago, including Lucien FRI Bonaparte, who commissioned Boccherini to compose a number FRI of works. The opus 57 piano quintets, Boccherini dedicated FRI to the French nation. FRI FRI In 1805 Boccherini died, probably due to the tuberculosis FRI which had troubled him for most of his life. He was buried FRI in Madrid, but later in 1927 his remains were taken back to FRI his birthplace of Lucca for reburial. Just before he died, FRI he was working on one last String Quartet, in D major, of FRI which only one movement now survives in full.
