MON MON As a 16 year old, Schubert was faced with a dilemma: whether MON or not to stay in full-time education? In the event, he MON chose to leave academia and train as an assistant MON schoolmaster. He worked at his father's own establishment, MON with some 200 boys packed into the family's small apartment. MON Despite these unpromising conditions, Schubert succeeded in MON writing numerous works for various combinations, some of MON them acknowledged masterpieces. MON The first piece of Schubert's to be performed in public was MON a setting of the Mass. His father was so delighted with his MON son's achievement that he promised to purchase Franz a MON top-of-the-range fortepiano. This performance was also the MON likely catalyst for another significat moment in young MON Schubert's life, a new love affair. MON MON Marriage was evidently out of the question for an MON impoverished assistant schoolmaster. In any case, Schubert MON had other social interests. He was introduced to the MON melancholic poet Mayrhofer, and later to the man to whom MON many would attribute his moral and physical decline, Franz MON von Schober. So close did these two friends become that they MON even called themselves 'Schobert'. This growing circle of MON intellectual and artistic friends would prove an important MON influence on Schubert, eventually persuading him to abandon MON the schoolroom for the then precarious career of freelance MON composer. TUE TUE In today's episode, Donald recounts Schubert's first, TUE awkward introduction to one of Vienna's most prestigious TUE opera singers of the day, Johann Michael Vogl. Vogl was a TUE man who had evidently grown tired of music and musicians, TUE and whose idea of relaxation was translating classical TUE Greek. Luring Vogl into the Schubert circle was far from TUE easy, but once he was forced into listening to some of the TUE young man's songs he was captivated, later expressing his TUE incredulity that 'such depth and maturity could emanate from TUE the little young man'. TUE TUE Schubert had abandoned the schoolroom for the precarious TUE life of a freelance composer, and friends such as Vogl would TUE prove crucial for such success as he was to enjoy in his TUE short life. It was a holiday to Steyr in the company of TUE Michael Vogl that would inspire Schubert to compose the TUE Trout Quintet, at the behest of a mining official and TUE amateur cellist. There were other amusements besides the TUE mountain scenery: Schubert noted the presence of eight girls TUE in the house where he lodged, 'nearly all of them pretty'. TUE It was to one of them, Josefine von Koller, that he TUE dedicated a piano sonata in A major. TUE TUE Schubert's main ambition at this time was to compose a TUE successful opera for the Vienna stage. The results of his TUE labour met with limited success, and Die Zwillingsbruder or TUE the Twin Brothers only staggered on for a few performances, TUE and nearly caused a riot on the first night. As Donald TUE Macleod recounts, one of Mozart's sons was distinctly TUE underwhelmed by the production. Believing Schubert to be a TUE 'beginner' he noted in his diary that 'most people felt TUE farce wasn't Schubert's strongest suit'. In fact, Schubert TUE was anything but a beginner in music, and in private he was TUE pursuing new, and perhaps strange pathways, including the TUE tantalising and dramatic Quartettsatz. His setting of the Erlkönig WED was rejected by one major publisher, and dismissed as WED 'trash' by another Herr Schubert to whom it had been sent in WED error. When the song finally made its way into print it WED proved to be a best seller. WED WED Although his ambitions to become a success on the opera WED stage were still faltering, Schubert found that his songs WED were beginning to open doors in Biedermeier Vienna. He was WED in demand as a composer of part songs, popular with drinking WED and glee clubs. Schubert did his best to rescue that genre WED from its bibulous associations, the same cannot be said of WED the composer himself. Frequently hungover, there's no doubt WED Schubert was partying hard, and would pay a high price for WED his dissipation and debauchery. A plane tree THU THU 12:00 Composer of the Week b03q5f91 (Listen) THU Franz Schubert (1797-1828), Song Cycles and Symphonies THU THU Franz Schubert hopes to achieve public acclaim as THU symphonist. THU THU Schubert's health was in rapid decline. Nevertheless, THU despite his frequent excesses in the tavern, he continued to THU produce works of enduring greatness. His first song cycle, THU Die Schöne Müllerin or the Maid of the Mill was produced at THU a time when he had all but lost his hair, due to the mercury THU treatment for his syphilis. As Donald Macleod notes in THU today's programme, the cycle can be interpreted as a lament THU for lost innocence. THU THU Schubert appears to have been subject to violent THU mood-swings, sometimes even pointlessly destroying cups, THU glasses and plates to deliberately create havoc. Despite his THU occasional antisocial behaviour, Schubert was by no means an THU outcast; indeed, as an elected member of the committee of THU Vienna's prestigious musical society, the Gesellschaft der THU Musikfreunde, he was almost in danger of becoming part of THU the musical establishment. Holidaying in Upper Austria in THU May 1825, he was astonished to find that his compositions THU were everywhere, particularly songs and piano duets for the THU home musician. During this time, Schubert was sketching and THU working hard to complete his great C-major symphony, his THU ninth (although the first that he would present for public THU performance). This was dedicated to the Gesellschaft but its THU length and difficulty militated against a performance during THU his lifetime. THU THU Presented by Donald Macleod. FRI FRI One of Schubert's more remarkable creations is the FRI song-cycle Winterreise or Winter Journey, setting the poems FRI of Wilhelm Müller. It's a composition that astounded FRI Schubert's many friends when they first heard the composer FRI singing through this bleak work in its entirety: "We were FRI quite dumfounded by the gloomy mood of these songs' recalled FRI one friend, Josef von Spaun, 'From then on Schubert was a FRI sick man'. FRI FRI Tempting as it is to see the cycle as a harbinger of FRI Schubert's doom, it seems that the composer was no less FRI convivial than in earlier, happier times - as Donald FRI recounts, he even went down to his local pub on completing FRI the first half of the cycle! And musically, too, Franz FRI Schubert was eager to pursue new genres, with commercial FRI potential. His Impromptus, for example, contain moments of FRI quicksilver brilliance. FRI FRI Once again, his friends encouraged Schubert to seek out FRI greater public recognition. Planning a concert at the hall FRI of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, Vienna's prestigious FRI music society, the composer worked hard to complete a varied FRI programme of new works, including a new string quartet and FRI his magnificent Piano Trio in E flat. The concert was well FRI attended, and brought in much needed receipts to swell FRI Schubert's bank balance. But in the papers there was FRI deafening silence. Vienna's critics were more interested in FRI the pyrotechnics of Paganini. Even Schubert himself would FRI blow a great deal of money for a top-price ticket for a FRI once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the violinist in action. FRI FRI One key work from this year is the profound piano duet, the FRI Fantasy in F, which Schubert dedicated to Princess Caroline FRI Esterhazy. There is strong evidence that Schubert was in FRI love with her, and that she was something of a muse to his FRI romantic yearnings. It's not clear if the princess either FRI reciprocated, or was even aware of his feelings for her! FRI FRI Donald concludes this week's look at the life, loves and FRI friendships of Franz Schubert with what is possibly his last FRI completed work, the show-stopping aria written at the FRI request of the opera singer Anna Milder-Hauptmann. This is FRI The Shepherd on the Rock, a work in which the shepherd FRI expresses his hopes for the spring - a spring which the FRI composer would never live to see.
