MON MON Over the last seven decades, Composer of the Week has MON explored the life and music of just about every major MON composer in classical music, and plenty of less well-known MON names too. As the programme reached its 70th birthday this MON year, Donald Macleod challenged listeners to come up with a MON composer who had never appeared on the programme before. MON Over four-and-a-half-thousand suggestions were sent in, MON including figures from all kinds of historical periods and MON musical genres. This special anniversary week of programmes MON explores just one of those names: a composer whose story MON seems particularly intriguing. Her music was much celebrated MON in her lifetime, indeed it remains as beguiling today as it MON was to her audiences in 19th century Paris. Listeners may MON wonder how the name of Louise Farrenc became so lost to MON history. MON MON Louise Farrenc may not be a household name in the MON twenty-first century but in her own lifetime she enjoyed a MON career of international standing; her music was played MON across Europe. She was twice recognised by the French MON Institute for her outstanding contribution to chamber music MON and she was also an accomplished pianist who received MON favourable reviews for her public performances. For thirty MON years she was a valued teacher at the Paris Conservatoire MON and, in the latter part of her life, she devoted the MON majority of her time to the preparation of a groundbreaking MON anthology of keyboard music, dating from the 16th to the MON 19th century. MON MON Farrenc was born in 1804, a year before Fanny Hensel, Felix MON Mendelssohn's older sister. However, the fifty plus MON published works that make up her legacy, immediately set her MON apart. While the majority of her contemporaries had a MON tendency to focus on smaller forms, songs, choral works and MON salon pieces for the piano, Farrenc's creative interests MON involved writing music for much larger combinations of MON instruments, including quintets, a sextet, a nonet, MON orchestral overtures and three symphonies. MON MON Donald Macleod begins his survey by examining the context of MON Louise Farrenc's life. Paris born, she remained in the MON capital, a centre of musical excellence, her whole life. We MON get an idea of her keyboard skills in a concert waltz, while MON her abilities as a composer for multiple combinations of MON instruments are admirably displayed in an excerpt from her MON first symphony and a piano quintet. TUE TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week b03lnfjh (Listen) TUE 70th Anniversary Special: Louise Farrenc (1804-1875), The TUE Sorbonne TUE TUE Composer of the Week marks its 70th birthday by featuring a TUE composer suggested by Radio 3 listeners. TUE TUE Over the last seven decades, Composer of the Week has TUE explored the life and music of just about every major TUE composer in classical music, and plenty of less well-known TUE names too. As the programme reached its 70th birthday this TUE year, Donald Macleod challenged listeners to come up with a TUE composer who had never appeared on the programme before. TUE Over four-and-a-half-thousand suggestions were sent in, TUE including figures from all kinds of historical periods and TUE musical genres. This special anniversary week of programmes TUE explores just one of those names: a composer whose story TUE seems particularly intriguing. Her music was much celebrated TUE in her lifetime, indeed it remains as beguiling today as it TUE was to her audiences in 19th-century Paris. Listeners may TUE wonder how the name of Louise Farrenc became so lost to TUE history. TUE TUE Louise Farrenc may not be a household name in the TUE twenty-first century, but in her own lifetime she enjoyed a TUE career of international standing; her music was played TUE across Europe.; her music was played across Europe. She was TUE twice recognised by the French Institute for her outstanding TUE contribution to chamber music and she was also an TUE accomplished pianist who received favourable reviews for her TUE public performances. For thirty years she was a valued TUE teacher at the Paris Conservatoire and, in the latter part TUE of her life, she cultivated a special interest in early TUE music. TUE TUE Farrenc was born in 1804, a year before Fanny Hensel, Felix TUE Mendelssohn's older sister. However, the fifty-plus TUE published works that make up her legacy immediately set her TUE apart. While the majority of her contemporaries had a TUE tendency to focus on smaller forms, songs, choral works and TUE salon pieces for the piano, Farrenc's creative interests TUE involved writing music for much larger combinations of TUE instruments, including quintets, a sextet, a nonet , TUE orchestral overtures and three symphonies. TUE TUE In the second part of his survey, Donald Macleod considers TUE the significance of Farrenc's education and family TUE circumstances on her professional ambitions. She came from a TUE distinguished line of painters, sculptors and engravers, TUE that could trace its lineage back to Louis XIV. She grew up TUE in an apartment in the Sorbonne, amid an enclave of artists TUE who enjoyed royal privileges. As well as her natural TUE proficiency in music, Farrenc was good at drawing, painting, TUE could speak Italian and English and express herself most TUE elegantly in her mother tongue, French. THU THU 12:00 Composer of the Week b03lnfjm (Listen) THU 70th Anniversary Special: Louise Farrenc (1804-1875), An THU Outstanding Pedagogue THU THU Composer of the Week marks its 70th birthday by featuring a THU composer suggested by Radio 3 listeners. THU THU Over the last seven decades, Composer of the Week has THU explored the life and music of just about every major THU composer in classical music, and plenty of less well-known THU names too. As the programme reached its 70th birthday this THU year, Donald Macleod challenged listeners to come up with a THU composer who had never appeared on the programme before. THU Over four-and-a-half-thousand suggestions were sent in, THU including figures from all kinds of historical periods and THU musical genres. This special anniversary week of programmes THU explores just one of those names: a composer whose story THU seems particularly intriguing. Her music was much celebrated THU in her lifetime, indeed it remains as beguiling today as it THU was to her audiences in 19th-century Paris. Listeners may THU wonder how the name of Louise Farrenc became so lost to THU history. THU THU Louise Farrenc may not be a household name in the THU twenty-first century, but in her own lifetime she enjoyed a THU career of international standing; her music was played THU across Europe. She was twice recognised by the French THU Institute for her outstanding contribution to chamber music THU and she was also an accomplished pianist who received THU favourable reviews for her public performances. For thirty THU years she was a valued teacher at the Paris Conservatoire THU and, in the latter part of her life, she cultivated a THU special interest in early music. THU THU Farrenc was born in 1804, a year before Fanny Hensel, Felix THU Mendelssohn's older sister. However, the fifty-plus THU published works that make up her legacy immediately set her THU apart. While the majority of her contemporaries had a THU tendency to focus on smaller forms, songs, choral works and THU salon pieces for the piano, Farrenc's creative interests THU involved writing music for much larger combinations of THU instruments, including quintets, a sextet, a nonet , THU orchestral overtures and three symphonies. THU THU In the fourth instalment of this week of programmes THU featuring the life and music of Louise Farrenc, Donald THU Macleod considers the significance of her position as a THU professor of piano at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire.
