MON Born Jacob Liebmann Beer (the prefatory 'Meyer' was added on MON the death of his maternal grandfather, Liebmann Meyer MON Wulff), Meyerbeer's family background was super-rich and MON hyper-cultured, so there was no obstacle to the development MON of his precocious talents. TUE TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week b01s358h (Listen) TUE Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864), Devilry and Carnage - A Grand TUE Night Out TUE TUE The passage of time has not been kind to Giacomo Meyerbeer. TUE The most successful opera composer of his day, whose TUE transformation of the medium helped to set the stage for TUE Wagner, Verdi, Mussorgsky and a host of others, his work is TUE now seldom performed. All this week, Donald Macleod explores TUE the life and rediscovers the work of this king of Grand TUE Opera, in conversation with one of the composer's leading TUE advocates, Robert Letellier. TUE TUE Today's programme sees Meyerbeer in Paris, at the invitation TUE of Rossini, who had recently been installed as director of TUE the Théâtre Italien there. Meyerbeer's first two Parisian TUE productions were of operas he had composed during his time TUE in Italy, but before long he was being commissioned to write TUE something brand new for the temple of French music drama - TUE the Opéra. This was Robert le diable, Robert the devil, the TUE tale of a childless woman to whom the devil grants her TUE dearest wish - a son. Robert is a bad boy who eventually TUE repents, but not before he's got up to some mischief, TUE including a graveyard encounter with a pack of zombie nuns, TUE whose ballet shocked and thrilled the Paris of 1831 - and, TUE in due course, cities across the globe. Chopin pronounced TUE the opera a masterpiece, Berlioz praised its orchestration, TUE and Liszt was so taken with it that he composed a fantasy on TUE its themes: Réminiscences de Robert le diable. Meyerbeer's TUE next opera opened to an expectant house on the 29th of TUE February 1836. To say that audiences were not disappointed TUE with Les Huguenots, a tale of political and religious TUE conflict that must have struck a clanging chord in that age TUE of revolutions, would be putting it mildly; it went on to TUE become probably the most successful opera of the 19th TUE century, and its influence can be felt in works as disparate TUE as Die Meistersinger, Don Carlo and Khovanshchina. WED WED Thirteen years separate Meyerbeer's second French opera, Les WED Huguenots, from his third, Le prophète, whose appearance WED suffered a protracted delay due to a serious disagreement WED over casting. Meyerbeer certainly wasn't one to sit around WED doing nothing, though, and today's programme examines how he WED occupied himself during this hiatus - with a particular WED focus on his output of songs, many of which were WED mini-dramas. In 1842, Meyerbeer was appointed WED Generalmusikdirektor of Prussia, in which role he wrote a WED German-language opera, Ein Feldlager in Schlesien (for the WED opening of the new Berlin Opera, after the old one had burnt WED down), as well as music for official court occasions, like WED his sequence of Fackeltänze - torch marches. THU THU 12:00 Composer of the Week b01s358r (Listen) THU Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864), A Change of Tack THU THU The passage of time has not been kind to Giacomo Meyerbeer. THU The most successful opera composer of his day, whose THU transformation of the medium helped to set the stage for THU Wagner, Verdi, Mussorgsky and a host of others, his work is THU now seldom performed. All this week, Donald Macleod explores THU the life and rediscovers the work of this king of Grand THU Opera, in conversation with one of the composer's leading THU advocates, Robert Letellier. THU THU After the colossal success of his first two French operas, THU Robert le diable and Les Huguenots, Meyerbeer was keen to THU produce a third work in the same vein, to ensure that his THU "system" of music drama was based on "indestructible THU pillars". This turned out to be Le prophète, first staged in THU 1849, which itself proved to be a pillar of the operatic THU repertoire until well into the 20th century. Like Les THU Huguenots, Le prophète has a basis in historical fact - an THU Anabaptist revolt that took place in Münster in the 1530s, THU doubtless given added resonance to first-run audiences by THU the European-wide unrest of the previous year. Add to this THU Meyerbeer's most impressively through-composed music to THU date, the opera's epic scale, and the no-expenses-spared THU production of the Paris Opéra - including a ballet danced on THU specially designed roller skates (to simulate the effect of THU dancing on ice) and the first theatrical use of an electric THU arc lamp (to simulate a sunrise) - and it's no surprise that THU audiences didn't know what had hit them. Perhaps the THU composer realized that he had gone as far as he could in THU this direction, because for his next operatic project, THU L'étoile du nord, he turned instead to the gentler medium of THU comic opera. FRI The most successful opera composer of his day, whose FRI transformation of the medium helped to set the stage for FRI Wagner, Verdi, Mussorgsky and a host of others, his work is FRI now seldom performed. All this week, Donald Macleod explores FRI the life and rediscovers the work of this king of Grand FRI Opera, in conversation with one of the composer's leading FRI advocates, Robert Letellier. FRI FRI The final programme of the week is devoted to Meyerbeer's FRI last two music dramas: Dinorah, a gentle Breton love story FRI intertwined with a yarn about a hunt for cursed treasure; FRI and L'Africaine - The African Woman - an operatic epic FRI conjuring up imagined, even fantastical events in the life FRI of the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. Meyerbeer died the FRI day after he finished his fair copy of the full score, FRI leaving instructions that the work was to remain unstaged FRI should he not be around to oversee its production; his FRI wishes were ignored, and L'Africaine took to the stage a FRI year later, in a practical performing edition by the Belgian FRI composer and musicologist, François-Joseph Fétis.
